Technology and Product Introduction

In recent years, tightening PFAS regulations have driven growing demand for PTFE alternatives in sliding materials. Using proprietary composition design and compounding technology, Asahi Kasei has developed a flame-retardant polyamide resin that is PFAS-free* while delivering excellent sliding performance and flame resistance (UL94 V-0 equivalent). It helps reduce friction, wear, and noise in sliding components — particularly inside electrical and electronic equipment where flame retardancy is required.

material Issues
Halogen-based flame-retardance PBT material Insufficient sliding properties / Environmental restrictions due to halogen content
PEEK Excessive performance and cost for certain applications

LEONA™ (under development) is a next-generation, PFAS-free, flame-retardant polyamide that addresses these challenges — pairing high performance with environmental compliance across a wide range of applications.

Features of LEONA™ products: High sliding properties

This developmental product delivers sliding performance superior to halogenated flame-retardant PBT and PEEK, and comparable to POM — a material widely used in sliding components. Its low coefficient of friction and shallow wear depth reduce damage to mating surfaces and help minimize equipment contamination from wear particles. And because it is halogen-free despite being flame-retardant, it meets stricter environmental regulations.
