The Evolution and Structural Changes of AI Data Centers

As demand for AI training and inference continues to grow rapidly, data centers are undergoing significant evolution.

While conventional data centers typically had rack power densities of 5–10 kW, AI data centers can exceed 40–132 kW per rack due to the high-density integration of GPUs and AI accelerators. As a result, the focus of data center design is shifting fundamentally from IT equipment alone to integrated power and thermal management.

On the power side, the transition toward higher current, higher voltage, and three-phase power systems is making advanced PDUs, UPSs, ESSs/BBUs, and connectors increasingly important. On the cooling side, in addition to the adoption of large high-speed fans, the introduction of liquid cooling systems that include CDUs and associated pumps is accelerating. These changes are raising the performance requirements for a wide range of components, including resin parts.

As resin materials play an expanding role as structural and safety components, Asahi Kasei’s modified PPE resin XYRON™ offers a combination of high heat resistance, flame retardancy, electrical insulation, dimensional stability, and excellent water resistance. We propose and develop optimal grades to meet the specific requirements of each component.

What is XYRON™?

XYRON™ is Asahi Kasei's family of modified PPE (modified polyphenylene ether or m-PPE) resin products. At Asahi Kasei, we offer a broad lineup of polymer alloys and actively develop new customized grades tailored to customer and market needs.

XYRON™ provides several outstanding properties. In addition to high heat resistance, it offers excellent flame retardancy, electrical insulation, dimensional stability, and water resistance, as well as low specific gravity. By combining the characteristics of PPE with those of partner resins, XYRON™ is designed to deliver a synergistic balance of performance.

Summary of XYRON™ Characteristics

  • Low specific gravity: Among the lowest specific gravity values in engineering plastics, contributing to lighter components.
  • Heat resistance: A lineup with glass transition temperatures ranging from 90°C to 220°C, providing stability even in high-temperature environments, including hot-water and hydrolysis resistance.
  • Flame retardancy: High oxygen index and excellent suitability for flame-retardant formulations. V-0 and other grades are available.
  • Electrical insulation and dimensional stability:High volume resistivity, low linear expansion, and low shrinkage, making it suitable for precision molding.
  • Low water absorption, acid resistance, and alkali resistance: Helps minimize changes in physical properties and dimensions.
  • Low dielectric constant and low dissipation factor: Enables Dk/Df control with low temperature dependence.

For server fans and large HVAC fans in AI data centers, XYRON™ suppresses deformation during high-speed rotation by combining low specific gravity with high rigidity. Its low specific gravity reduces centrifugal force, while its high rigidity resists flexing, keeping fan blades dimensionally stable under load.
Because its mechanical properties show low temperature dependence, XYRON™ also supports stable cooling performance in high-temperature environments. In addition, it provides UL94 V-0 / 5VA halogen-free flame retardancy, helping achieve both safety and reliability.
