What is 3D printer filament?

3D printer filament is a thread-like material for MEX/FDM/FFF 3D printers. 
Asahi Kasei has begun trial sales of filaments for 3D printers to meet our customer needs, and will first offer filament products made from XYRON™, a modified polyphenylene ether (PPE) resin product.

There are various types of 3D printers, and the products offered here are resin filaments for the "MEX", "FDM" or "FFF" methods. MEX stands for Material Extrusion, FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling, and FFF stands for Fused Filament Fabrication. These words are used synonymously. This method softens resin material at high temperatures and layers the material as it is output from a nozzle to create a three-dimensional object.

Key Features

Asahi Kasei has developed a filament for 3D printers using XYRON™, a modified PPE resin that is used in a wide range of applications due to its unique properties. Filaments for 3D printers using modified PPE resin XYRON™ have the following features.

  • Low specific gravity, which contributes to weight saving and reduction of material usage
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Excellent electrical properties and insulation properties
  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Excellent impact resistance

These characteristics are expected to provide performance comparable to super engineering plastic filaments, depending on how they are used.

*XYRON™ is Asahi Kasei's family of modified PPE (modified polyphenylene ether or mPPE) resin products. Modified PPE resins are polymer alloys formed by compounding PPE resins with other types of resin. PPE resins are engineering plastics featuring excellent heat resistance, flame retardance, electrical properties, and dimensional stability, with low water absorption and low specific gravity. Asahi Kasei offers a lineup of various polymer alloy products, including PPE+PS, PA+PPE, PP+PPE, and PPS+PPE.

PPE/PS alloy filament

PPE/PS alloy filament is a filament that uses an engineering plastic that has acquired the UL 94 standard V-0 for flame resistance as the base resin of the filament. Its features are low specific gravity, excellent dimensional stability, excellent insulation, excellent heat resistance, and excellent impact resistance.  
Two grades, JX20Z and JX50Z, are available according to the required heat resistance.
These grades have lower specific gravity and a better balance of heat resistance and impact strength than other resin filaments with flame retardance.

PA/PPE alloy filament

PA/PPE alloy filament is filament made by alloying Polyamide (PA), a crystalline resin with excellent heat and oil resistance, and PPE resin, an amorphous resin, to lower water absorption and achieve good printability and low warpage. We have developed a grade called JXAS1, which has excellent low water absorption, low warpage, dimensional stability, heat resistance, impact resistance, and oil resistance.
It has superior impact resistance and heat resistance compared to PA6 non-reinforced products, which is the typical PA used in 3D printer filaments.
