What is 3D printer filament?

3D printer filament is a thread-like material for MEX/FDM/FFF 3D printers.
Asahi Kasei has begun trial sales of filaments for 3D printers to meet our customer needs, and will first offer filament products made from XYRON™, a modified polyphenylene ether (PPE) resin product.

There are various types of 3D printers, and the products offered here are resin filaments for the "MEX", "FDM" or "FFF" methods. MEX stands for Material Extrusion, FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling, and FFF stands for Fused Filament Fabrication. These words are used synonymously. This method softens resin material at high temperatures and layers the material as it is output from a nozzle to create a three-dimensional object.

Key features and product lineups of Asahi Kasei's 3D printer filament

Introducing the excellent properties and product lineup of filament products made from Asahi Kasei 's modified PPE resin "XYRON™".

Key Features

Asahi Kasei has developed a filament for 3D printers using XYRON™, a modified PPE resin that is used in a wide range of applications due to its unique properties. Filaments for 3D printers using modified PPE resin XYRON™ have the following features.

  • Low specific gravity, which contributes to weight saving and reduction of material usage
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Excellent electrical properties and insulation properties
  • Excellent heat resistance
  • Excellent impact resistance

These characteristics are expected to provide performance comparable to super engineering plastic filaments, depending on how they are used.

* XYRON™ modified PPE is a general term for polymer alloys made by mixing PPE resin with other resins, and is a material with excellent flame resistance, heat resistance, electrical properties (insulation), dimensional stability, etc. Asahi Kasei offers a lineup of various polymer alloy products, such as PPE/PS, PA/PPE, PP/PPE, and PPS/PPE.

Product Lineup

Currently, there are four grades available.

JX50Z An alloy of PPE and PS, with higher heat resistance and excellent balance with impact resistance.
JXG70NEW A grade that has strength and stiffness given by blending GF (glass-fiber) with PPE/PS resin
JXAS1 Alloying PPE and Polyamide (PA), a crystalline resin with excellent heat and oil resistance, to achieve good printability and low warpage
JXAG5NEW A grade that is strength and heat resistance by blending GF (glass-fiber) with PA/PPE resin, which is characterized by low warpage.

Features of products

PPE/PS (non-reinforced) series

The PPE/PS (non-reinforced) series is a filament that uses a resin that has acquired the UL94 standard (V-0), a flame resistance standard, as the base resin of the filament. It has excellent low specific gravity, dimensional stability, insulation, heat resistance, and impact resistance, and is available in the JX50Z grade.
Compared to other flame-Flame retardance resin filaments, it has a low specific gravity and an excellent balance of heat resistance and impact strength.
Due to these characteristics, depending on how it is used, it is expected to achieve performance comparable to that of super engineering plastics plastic filaments.

PPE/PS (reinforced) series

The PPE/PS (reinforced) series is a PPE/PS (polystyrene)/GF reinforced resin filament that uses GF reinforced resin that has obtained the UL94 standard (V-1), a flame resistance standard, as the base resin for the filament, and is available in a grade called JXG70.
strength and stiffness are imparted by blending GF (glass-fiber) with PPE/PS resin, achieving lower density, higher strength and stiffness compared to PEI/CF reinforced resin.

PA/PPE Series

PA/PPE alloy is a filament that suppresses changes in water absorption dimensions and achieves low warpage during modeling by alloying amorphous PPE resin into PA (polyamide) resin, which has heat resistance and oil resistance. We offer a grade called JXAS1 that has excellent low water absorption, low warpage, dimensional stability, heat resistance, impact resistance, and oil resistance.
Compared to the typical PA6 non-reinforced PA used in 3D printer filaments, it has excellent impact resistance and heat resistance.
In addition, we are developing a grade called JXAG5 that adds strength and heat resistance by blending GF (glass-fiber) into PA/PPE resin.
Compared to PA/CF reinforced resins, it achieves low density, high strength, and high heat resistance.

PA/PPE (reinforced) series

We offer a grade called JXAG5, which has strength and heat resistance, by blending GF (glass-fiber) with PA/PPE resin, which is made by alloying heat- and oil resistance resistant PA (polyamide) resin with amorphous PPE resin.
Compared to PA/CF reinforced resins, it achieves low density, high strength, and high heat resistance.
